A book of dreams : Works for processed found sounds and piano

JFM-CD04 ©2008. Joe Frawley is proud to present A book of dreams: works for processed found sounds and piano, a subconscious Odyssey of surreal soundscapes, artfully blurring the boundary between music and sound art. Previously released as two separate EPs (Tangerine and The Hypnotist), the 12 tracks on this 50 minute compilation have been internationally acclaimed for their musical sensitivity, electronic ingenuity, and aesthetic innovation.

"A very narrative & cinematic approach to using sound effects, spoken word and tape collages, almost to make a radiophonic play of sorts... Frawley offers us tiny glimpses into a private, hermetically-sealed world that is incredibly beautiful."--Sound Projector magazine

"Sounding like a slightly more classical version of The Orb, the music comes from that place between waking and sleep, snatches of speech only adding to the barely glimpsed mystery, the sounds beautifully mixed for maximum impact. Throughout, the piano is delicately poised, a soft rain of notes that are filled with emotion and blessed with gentle grace."--Terrascope Online

"Not exactly 'ambient', but definitely 'cinema for the ear'... the carefully orchestrated samples and sound fragments seem to tell a story without images. A beautiful tension is created in a dialogue between the electronic soundscape and the piano improvisations."--Peter van Cooten, Dream Scenes (blog)

"What I can comment on is the breathtaking quality of the music. Frawley's piano underlies everything here with a series of gently unfurling loops of melody. Intertwined with this is a simply bewildering array of immaculately placed sound effects and voice samples. An eerie and utterly compulsive listen that is wholeheartedly recommended." --Ian Holloway, Wonderful Wooden Reasons

The Hypnotist

Note: The material on this EP has been re-released along with Tangerine on JFM-CD04, A book of dreams. See more information on this page

JFM-CD03 ©2008. Composer/sound artist Joe Frawley is proud to announce the release of The Hypnotist, the third in a series of 30 minute suites exploring interior worlds of dream and memory via electronic combinations of found sounds and music.

Notes on The Hypnotist:
This new work was conceived of as the soundtrack to an invisible film in which the central analogy is between a visitor to an unfamiliar city and a therapist exploring the mind of a patient through hypnotic techniques. The "film" is an abstract construction, designed to stimulate the imagination by way of suggestion, rather than clearly outlining characters, plot, etc. My own interpretation, though there is great room for others, is that during the course of a hypnotic session, it is discovered, buried deep in memory, that a sort of crime has been committed- one with both erotic and supernatural overtones (or, if not a crime, then a deeply formative event, in which the image of grass and a mysterious pair of white gloves figure sharply). It also becomes unclear, to me, during the course of the work, whether the hypnotist him/herself is not in fact a party to the crime. I offer the previous only as a starting point, from which I hope more fertile imaginations will paint their own pictures, write their own stories. --JF December, 2007

“Who in the rainbow can draw the line where the violet tint ends and the orange tint begins? Distinctly we see the difference of the colors, but where exactly does the one first blendingly enter into the other? So with sanity and insanity.” -- Herman Melville

JFM-CD02 ©2007. The composer continues his experimentation with hypnotic, sample-based sound collage, this time weaving his own piano improvisation even deeper into the collage texture. Playfully ambiguous, atmospheric, and gently disorienting, Tangerine is a unique sound world featuring the title track, an ambitious symphonic-scale electronic assemblage, as well as an extended reworking of the previously released "Blue Arcana". The piano solo "Exit Music" closes the recording, tenderly ushering the listener back into daylight. The effect of the whole is like a dream that erases itself the more you try to remember.

Artist's Statement for Tangerine
Over 100 audio samples have been purposefully interwoven to create this 16 minute sound composition. Drawing from a broad range of source material (including NASA transmissions, children's recordings, archival audio of literary figures, and my own piano improvisations), sound samples were gathered and recombined according to texture, tone, and semantic interplay. "Tangerine" is my first large scale sound collage. It is intended to be experienced in a single sitting, as would a short film. The overall intent of the work is to stimulate the imagination. I hope for the piece to be completed uniquely in the mind of each individual listener, by their own visualizations, and the ideas they bring to it.
